Few days ago while traveling back for the USA to Nepal , I planed to have a short transit trip in Doha, Qatar. Although now a days a lot of airways have their own stopover trips and benefits, among the Middle East airlines that fly such routes, for an economy passengers I believe, Qatar is the most economical one for backpackers and can be luxurious for those that fly first class. These are my tips and reason to why Doha, Qatar over more popular countries like Dubai in the Middle East.

Fly from Qatar Airways: I would recommend you to travel from Qatar Airways as the flight tickets are cheap and you most certainly will have a transit in doha. They offer various tours for you to look at Qatar and if planning for a stopover, their partnership hotels all 4 or 5 starts offer rooms for 2 from USD$ 25 approx. Nepali RS 2770.
For transit trips: book a flight that has transit time of least 6hr or more.
Second option would be to book a stopover, but they will cost you more, but you will be able to see more and do more in Doha. Do remember you will have to plan a 48 hr trip as that is the time limit transit visa is applicable for.
Free transit Visa: In addition to good priced hotels Qatar also offers a free transit visa to all the other nations who are not included in those 80 countries who can enter into Qatar visa free. The list of these countries is linked here.

The City: It should be considered that the country is still in its building stages and Qatar as a whole is preparing for the 2022 Fifa world Cup, but still they have a prominent skyline to view and a great mix of cuisine available at different prices. Traditional markets such as Souq Waqifs is a must see in Doha and is only 15-20 mins drive from Hamad International Airport.
Other places if interests would be, the pearl island, and Museum of Islamic art that opens from 9am to 7pm. Near the Souq there will be local guides that can take you around the city, and the prices are negotiable with them or you can pre-book trips from Qatar Airways, that start from Qatari Riyal 75.
Transportation: There is a new metro/ subway line that will start by December of this year and as of now they only have one line that opened in May. They have public busses and Karwa taxi both, operate in low prices. P.s. Karwa taxi only accepts cash.
Overall, it is a less tourist traffic place to visit at lower price and an alternative to more expensive Dubai as you still get sun, sea and sand at a lower price.
